Commissioned Bracelet
This project started with me exploring not only how we value objects, but also how we value people. During my initial research I decided to take a closer look and concentrate on the prison system and it's treatment of inmates. The gathering of evidence and facts started with a visit to Eastern State Penitentiary located in Philadelphia, USA, the prison is 'famed' for introducing the practice of 24hr solitary confinement. The once unique architectural design of the prison has subsequently influenced prison architecture throughout the world, including London's Pentonville prison.

P10 & P5 Ring
Researching rings from 1500-1700, I came across the image of a man wearing a
ring around his neck, hanging off a red thread. The fashion was to also wear them on your fingers and have it attached to your wrist with black thread. Elaborate rings were worn en-masse, adorned with gemstones, enamel and pearls. Diamonds were cut into points- something we don't see in contemporary jewellery.

Disobedient Ring
Giant inflatable cobblestones designed by Electric Collective are used as a tool in protests, gaining attention through scale and symbolic meaning. The symbol of the cobblestone references protesters throwing stones at police. Online you can read multiple news reports documenting the reaction of police to this uncontrollable object. However, is the real spectacle the oversized object, or is it the reaction by the authorities; struggling to compose themselves as they rip apart an inflatable?

The Common Good 1988
The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion. But allow a very lively debate within that spectrum. Even encouraging the more critical and dissident views. That gives people a sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of debate.

Foundling Museum
Interior of the hospital
It was highly unusual for a school, let alone one for abandoned children, to have an indoor swimming pool. The hospital was set within beautiful grounds and its facilities were second to none, we had so much in a material sense, but nothing in an emotional one.

Repetition Bracelet
An exploration into a repeated form.
After the fascinating prison tour of Eastern State Penitentiary, I began to question the very nature of prison, and wanted to further explore the different aspects of a world I had no experience of and could never really comprehend. I found reading prisoner stories the most informative and honest - this is where my pieces take their main inspiration from.
The Disobedient Ring challenges you to take control and assert power over the object; yet in doing so, the control is returned to the ring. To keep the ring in place, the wearer must also remain in one position.
